Cry for support for dementia caregivers

India’s rising population of patients with dementia will require governments, health care providers, and communities to accelerate efforts to provide support to families and caregivers of the patients, a report released today has said. The report on dementia in the Asia-Pacific region has estimated that India’s population of patients with dementia will, amid a rise in life-expectancy, increase from about four million in 2015 to more than six million by 2030. The report has cautioned that India, like several other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, faces the challenges of poor awareness leading to undocumented dementia, an assumption that it is a natural ageing process, and inadequate training for professional caregivers.
